Destination: Zurich, Switzerland
Zurich is in the heart of Europe and Switzerland at the northern end of Lake Zurich. Besides being the most populous capital in Switzerland, Zurich is the financial and economic capital, the city of banks but also a European cultural mecca. Not only can it boast numerous museums, theatres and concert halls, but also about 500 bars, nightclubs and discos. Its Bahnhofstrasse is one of the most famous shopping streets in Switzerland. In Zurich there are two of the most renowned academic institutions in the country: the University of Zurich and the prestigious Zurich Federal Polytechnic School (EPFZ). Between 1975 and 2002 the EPFZ produced no fewer than seven Nobel laureates. Kloten Airport near Zurich is the largest in the country. Zurich is also an important rail hub, and, for public transport, it is said to be the city with the best public transport service in the world. The multicultural environment and the wide range of leisure activities draws guests from all over the world. If you want to go shopping and visit the great boutiques and stores selling jewellery and watches, you must visit the Bahnhofstrasse: formerly the fortress moat of the city of Zurich. But there are other chic places in Zurich, whether it is Zurich-West or the Aussersihl district, which both contrast sharply with the Schipfe neighbourhood and its idyllic craft workshops. Zurich boasts the highest density of clubs in Switzerland. At 11 pm the festivities begin, lasting well into the early hours of the morning. In summer, the nightlife takes place not only in clubs but also outdoors, where people enjoy swimming in Lake Zurich to relax. Zurich also has a great deal to offer art enthusiasts. The city has no fewer than 50 museums, 14 of which are devoted to art. In the Kunsthaus Zurich museum of plastic arts, there is an important collection of paintings, sculptures, photos and videos. In addition, the Kunsthaus offers a large collection of works by Alberto Giacometti. Another highlight is the Rietberg Museum, one of the first international art centres of non-European art. A few metres from the main station of Zurich is the Schweizerisches Landesmuseum, a massive palace-style building constructed over one hundred years ago which houses the largest collection on cultural history in the country. However, in Zurich, art may be experienced outside the walls of the museums and art galleries, be it the Giacometti hall in the Zurich city Police Headquarters, the choir windows designed by Marc Chagall in the church of Fraumünster-Kirche or the work entitled Heureka by Jean Tinguely, located on the shore of Lake Zurich.
