The city of Oviedo has a monumental legacy, such as the Cathedral of San Salvador, the chapel of San Miguel de Lillo, dating from the ninth century, the Palace of Santa Maria del Naranco, also from the ninth century and the Foncalada, the only source of Romanesque architecture that is still in a good state of preservation, are just some of the gems gracing the city.
Deserving special mention is the Fontán, a complex of seventeenth and eighteenth century buildings that make up a porticoed square, which is where Fontan’s market is held every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday morning.
Oviedo is also a capital of music, high-quality zarzuela shows, symphonic cycles, opera seasons and jazz cycles.
Oviedo is world famous as the city that plays host to the Principe de Asturias awards, which are major prizes awarded annually to figures from the worlds of science, culture and human values in general.
Asturias has excellent cuisine and of course Oviedo is no exception, as its typical dish is bean stew, known locally, and in the rest of the province, as fabada. Carne gobernada, which is Asturian-style beef in white wine sauce, and hake in cider, form part of the traditional menu and are both accompanied by the famous Asturian cider.
Oviedo’s night life is pretty lively. Cider houses, pubs, restaurants and discos stay open until dawn, especially those located in the old city.
