The city of Marbella is one of the main destinations of the Spanish Costa del Sol. From Cabopino to Guadalmina, Marbella enjoys an exceptional location in Spanish geography. It has a microclimate of gentle temperatures and generous sunlight year-round. The sea and the mountain range, tradition and modernity unite in this Mediterranean city to offer a rich, multicultural and cosmopolitan atmosphere.
In the surrounding area there are 26 kilometres of sunbathed beaches, mountains, 16 golf courses, gorgeous natural settings, 4 yacht harbours (among which is the world-renowned Puerto Banús), shopping centres and an intense night life. Marbella is also known as a point of reference for elite tourism. It is well known for its visits by many personalities from the artistic, political and social scenes who, entranced by the full and rich range of possibilities, surrender to its charms. The city houses one of the most important shopping areas in Spain: a wide array of international firms, name brand boutiques and renowned shopping centres have made this city a paradise of distinction and a shopping paradise.
Among the big celebrations which may be enjoyed in Marbella, some deserving of special attention are Romería a la Cruz de Juanar on 3 May; the festivals of the patron saint, San Bernabé, on 11 June; and those of San Pedro de Alcántara on 19 October. All these celebrations are typically Andalusian for their colour and folklore. Another festivity of great interest is that of the Virgen del Carmen, held on 16 June with a maritime procession that conserves its traditional popular flavour year after year.
Likewise, Marbella is an exceptional place for culture and history. Among the places of interest is the old city centre, an magnificently preserved area with narrow white and flowering balconies where, together with the most colourful establishments, we find the Plaza de los Naranjos which includes the City Hall from the 16th century in perfect state; the Ermita de Santiago, the first Christian church of the city, built in the 15th century; and the Casa del Corregidor, from the 16th century.
Very close by we find the Church of La Encarnation, whose building was begun in the 17th century; the Chapel of San Juan de Dios, from the 16th century, which was a part of the town’s hospital; the Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz, built in the 16th century; and the Bazán Hospital, which has housed the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engraving since 1992, a leader in its genre with a rich collection of work by artists such as Picasso, Miró, Tàpies, Chillida, and many more. You can also visit the remains of the city walls that encircled the Muslim city and the walls of the Arab Castle where you can still see traces of Roman capitals which were taken from other constructions and used to build the walls. In the Bonsai Museum, also close by, there is a magnificent collection of specimens recognised as one of Europe’s best. The Cortijo Miraflores Museum, Ralli Museum and the Municipal Archaeological Collection make up a very suitable choice for a cultural visit. Nearby San Pedro de Alcántara, another of the large centres that make up the municipality of Marbella, you can see the ruins of a Hispano-Roman villa from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD called Villa Romana de Rio Verde, where a magnificent mosaic pavement depicts a medusa’s head as its main theme. Also in San Pedro de Alcántara are the remains of the Basílica Paleocristiana de Vega del Mar, one of the most important examples in Spain of the Early Christian era (4th century), which was discovered at the beginning of the 20th century.
Close to Guadalmina, you can visit the ruins of the Bóvedas, which are allegedly the only remains of a Roman spa dated from the 3rd century and whose peculiar construction is the subject of study. Finally, we finish this tour in Puerto Banús, located 6 km from Marbella.
It is considered one of the most famous yacht harbours on the entire Spanish coastline, housing 915 berths for some of the most luxurious vessels in the world. Its famous marina and its magnificent offering of internationally famous bars, restaurants and shops have made this a place full of glamour and charm for all its visitors. Because of its exceptional location, Marbella has become a point of reference for tourism worldwide without losing a bit of its typically Andalusian flavour or its historical essence. Mountains and Sea, tradition and modernity, unite in this Mediterranean city to offer visitors a multicultural and cosmopolitan ambience rich in nuances and open to progress with a lifestyle based on coexistence and on the friendly character of its people. |
