Shanghai is China's largest city and one of the world's most populous, with more than 20 million inhabitants. Located in East China, Shanghai lies in the Yangtze River Delta, centered on the coast of East China Sea.
One of the attractions of the city is its historic promenade along the Huangpu River, the Bund, where 24 buildings are located to show the remnants of colonial power, of architectural styles such as Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, etc. These include the Customs House (with its famous bell "Big Ching" in analogy with the Big Ben), the Bank of Hong Kong and Shanghai, the Peace Hotel and the Bank of China. This walk is in contrast with the modern and futuristic Pudong district, facing the Bund, on the other side of the river and the many skyscrapers that emerge among them the impressive TV Tower "Oriental Pearl".
The tower is the third highest in the world with 468 meters and has three huge areas. Another tower of the city is the Jin Mao and its 88 floors. However, the most spectacular building being built in Shanghai is the Shanghai Center, also located in the Pudong district, with 568 meters and 118 floors.
Yuyuan Gardens, located in the historic center of the city have been restored several times since, among other things, were wrecked in the nineteenth century by Westerners. Another famous places in Shanghai is the headquarters of the First National Congress of Chinese Communist Party, now a museum that testifies the meeting between Li Hanjun and Mao Tse-Tung on July 23, 1921 in one of the rooms.
"People's Square" is located in the ancient hippodrome of the city. It contains the Shanghai Grand Theater, Exhibition Hall of Urban Planning, the Municipal Government Building and the Shanghai Museum. Throughout history there have been significant events in there. One of the streets leading to the plaza is the mythical and pedestrian Nanjing, full of shops, making it one of the main attractions for foreign tourism in Shanghai. Another well-known street in Shanghai is to Zhapu lu, full of restaurants, neon signs and a continuous traffic.
Xintiandi, meanwhile, is an area of old shikumen (traditional houses of Shanghai) rebuilt and are now an attractive leisure facilities with bars, restaurants, cinemas and shops situated in the heart of the historic city. Very popular are also the French Quarter of Shanghai, whose legacy is a series of houses in a typical French colonial architectural style, and the Jing'an Temple.
