Destination information: Sintra, Portugal

Tourist region par excellence, and previously summer residence to the Portuguese monarchy and the Moorish chiefs, Sintra was declared a World Heritage City in 1995. Numerous monuments of great historic interest are to be found there and it is surrounded by charming little streets, which are a feature of this town.
The Palacio da Pena is a must see place, noted for its magnificent blend of Moorish and medieval styles.
The Sintra Royal Palace is another remarkable destination, where you will be able to discover the famous chimneys of the Royal Kitchen. Other points of interest are the ruins of the Moorish Castle, Monserrate Palace and Queluz Palace, the eighteenth century royal palace and known as the Portuguese Versailles.
But one mustn’t ignore the region’s natural heritage, which is unique in the world and regarded as a Cultural Landscape Heritage site. For this reason, apart from the architectural splendour of the city of Sintra, the mountain range is a monument in itself. It feels as if this mountain is magical.

Another outstanding point of interest is Cape Roca: the westernmost point of the Iberian peninsula and, indeed, of the whole of continental Europe (18 kms from Sintra). The cape is located where the spur ends of the Sintra mountains reach the sea, forming a cliff that reaches a height of over one hundred and forty metres. It is a highly recommended day trip and apart from the fact that you can gaze at such an impressive scene, travellers may also acquire the corresponding official certificate testifying that they have been to continental Europe’s most westerly point.
Another point along the coast worth visiting is the Boca do Inferno (literally, Hell’s Mouth): it is a recess of the coast surrounded by craggy rocks and caves. The Boca do Inferno is famous for its beauty and for the spectacle it offers the visitor. It isn’t easy to describe the sight you behold when the wind is blowing and the waves penetrate inside the craggy outcrops after dashing against the cliffs.
