Like something out of a fairy tale, the Hotel Albatroz stands at the top of a rocky hill facing the Bay of Cascais, in an incomparable setting that boasts gorgeous views of the sea and the coastline.
The Hotel Albatroz was built in 1873 as a palace for the Duke and Duchess of Loulé (who were members of the Portuguese royal family) and was known as the “Caixinha de Amêndoas”, or little box of almonds. It was restored and extended in 1983, to become a modern, prestigious luxury hotel which has retained the beauty and splendour of its original architectural style.

The Hotel Albatroz is situated in Cascais, 27 km from Lisbon, an ancient fishing village and one of Portugal’s most vibrant and sophisticated resorts offering all types of sports, shows and entertainment. Serra da Sintra, a place of rare beauty where imposing palaces and castles combine with stunning scenery, is only 15 km away from Cascais.
The centre of Cascais is the Praia da Ribeira, the beach where the fishermen unload their catch every morning. The fish market is situated on one side of the beach and behind it are the pedestrianised shopping streets. At the other end of the bay, to the west, stands the 16th-century citadel, which stands on the headland between the harbour and the bay.
Walking along the seafront promenade, the Malecón, you come to the Museo dos Condes Castro Guimarâes, housed in a typical 19th-century mansion, with round towers. It showcases a collection of decorative artworks, including beautiful Indo-Portuguese furniture, Portuguese paintings from the early 20th century and a vast library.
If you continue along the seafront you come to the Boca do Inferno, or Mouth of Hell, one of the most visited places in Cascais, where the waves crash violently against a rocky outcrop. The Praia da Rainha and Praia da Conceiçâo, situated in the east of the old district, are two ideal spots to go for a dip or sunbathe. |
