Destination information: Puigcerdà (Spain)
Discover the capital of the Cerdanya, a town which still preserves the same charm that captivated the first holidaymakers to the Girona Pyrenees at the end of the nineteenth century. As soon as you arrive, a visit to the Plaza de Santa Maria is highly recommended, together with the bell tower and the Town Hall (Casa de la Vila), which is the gothic building dominating the town’s main square along with the viewpoint and panoramic lift. Gothic architecture is represented in this town in the Sant Marti bridge, the Town Hall building or in the chapel of Nostra Senyora de Gràcia.
This setting is the ideal place for the practice of a wide variety of sports amidst nature. Horse riding, golf, hunting, fishing, adventure sports such as rafting, canyoning or bungee jumping are just some of the activities on offer. However, without any shadow of a doubt, skiing is the most important sport. Thanks to its modern facilities and the quality of its tourist services, the Cerdanya region has come to be regarded as one of the main winter sports centres in Spain.
The cuisine of the Pyrenees mountains is another of its charms in which local products are used to prepare traditional recipes such as “Trinxat”, “escorredissa a la llosa” and “pa de fetge” among others.
In addition, the tradition-filled celebrations enable the visitor to immerse himself in the culture of these mountain villages. The Puigcerda Giants, the February Carnival, the traditional pig and cheese festivities, the bestiar de tardor fair or the mythological heritage of Cerdanya, are just some of the most outstanding celebratory manifestations of this corner of the Pyrenees.
