Getting there
Airport: 10 km
City center: 14 km
Destination: Larnaca, Cyprus
Cyprus is the largest of the eastern Mediterranean islands and is located to the south of Turkey. In spite of its limited size, Cyprus possesses a rich cultural heritage, which is reflected in the numerous ancient monuments and sites, castles and fortifications dotted all over the island.
The Cyprus beaches are the main reason for visiting the island, which ranges from areas with calm waters to places with powerful waves, and from lively, tourist-packed spots to remote and private beaches. As regards beaches, the best ones are to be found in the zones of Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca and Nicosia.
Pafos captivates its visitors, thanks to its wonderful scenery, beautiful coastline, its historic treasures and charming villages, where tradition forms part and parcel of daily life. The magnificent medieval monasteries, which blend in perfectly with nature, remain as peacefully as ever, in the centre of Pafos.
Larnaca was built over the ancient city of Kition, a rich sea port and important centre for trade. The remains of this illustrious city can be seen in the stone walls and the urban complex dating from the twelfth century B.C, of what was the Mycenaean era. It is a city where east and west come together. Both Christendom and Islam have important places of worship in Larnaca. The Larnaca region as a whole has special things to offer the visitor, including the island’s ancient Neolithic settlement, the Stavrovouni monastery and the famous church of Angeloktisti.
Nicosia is located in the centre of the island of Cyprus, and is also the capital. The city centre is exemplified by its old quarter, which is also fashionable and contemporary, as well as being an important business centre. Visit the cathedral of “Agio Ioannis” (St. John’s Cathedral) and the Port Famagusta area, which is one of the old city’s 3 original access points, nowadays used as a cultural centre.
The second most important city on the island, because of its size, is the city of Limassol, which is spread between two ancient kingdoms: Amathous to the east and Kourion to the west and home to two of the most spectacular archaeological centres in Cyprus. It is also the largest port on the island.
