“Munich nestles between art and beer like a village between hills” and, even though it was written by Heinrich Heine 150 years ago, this description of the city of Munich is perfectly fitting today. In Munich, the blend between the old and the new makes it one of the most interesting cities of southern Germany, and of Europe. We are talking about the incredible gothic churches and the Oktoberfest, the Olymiazemtrum, where the summer Olympic games of 1972 were held, the Pinakothek, the Hofbräuhaus and the opera.
If we are trying to locate the city’s most emblematic building, we will find it very near the Marienplatz. It is the gothic cathedral church of Our Lady “Frauenkirche”, founded in the fifteenth century, whose onion-shaped domes have made it Munich’s most distinctive building.
From here you can hear the sound of the glockenspiel coming from the Marienplatz at 11 am, 12 am and 5 pm every day and then head towards the Hofbräuhaus, the world’s most famous beer hall where you have to try one of its legendary beers.
Although it is even better to visit Munich during the Oktoberfest in order to immerse yourself in the world of beer, here we can still appreciate the value of this bitter, frothy liquid to the Germans in the region and to the thousands of tourists who turn up at the event each year.
If we want to make a more cultural visit, the city has three big high quality museums: the Alte Pinakothek, the Deutsches Museum and the Pinakothek der Moderne, in which they have brought together a great collection of paintings, sculptures, jewels, prints and a vast antique collection.
Munich is also a city of palaces and lush green public parks where you can stroll around at your leisure, weather permitting.
We mustn’t forget a visit to the Olympiapark, the venue of the 1972 Olympic Games. You can go skating on the ice rink or have a swim in the pool.
