Destination information: Manila

Manila is the capital of the Philippines and is one of the largest cities in Asia. It is also one of the leading centres for both finance and trade. However, Manila is not just outstanding for business as it also has great cultural wealth, which is a mix of the heritage that its different settlers have left down through the centuries, making it what it is today, a modern capital that has adapted to the times.

The city is a real example of contrasts, thanks to its rich blend of foreign influences and its different local traditions.

There are many areas of interest, such as Rizal Park or Intramuros, which are located to the north. On the other side of the Pasig river is Quiapo, a district packed with colourful markets and Binondo, which comprises a Chinatown. The main business centre is Makati, which is located to the south and east, with the huge shopping malls of Greenhills just to the north. Quezon City and Pasay City, to the north and south of the city respectively, also have points of interest.

Fort Santiago was built to defend the mouth of the Pasig river and located nearby is the church of Saint Augustine, built in 1606 and the oldest stone built church in Manila and one of the few buildings to survive the destruction of the Second World War intact.  .

The climate of the Philippines has a high degree of humidity, which creates marvellous cloud effects over the bay, from where it is possible to gaze at some of the most beautiful sunsets. Some of the places offering the best views of the sunset are Rizal Park, Roxas Boulevard, the cultural complex around San Isidro and the SV Carina, which sets sail from Rizal Park for a cruise around the bay.

National Arts Month is an important arts festival held every February in several different exhibition halls in Manila. Around the same dates, the Bamboo Organ Festival, held in the Las Piñas Village, near Manila, takes place every year during the second week of February and is witness to the best organists in the world arriving in this small town.
