Destination: Bocas del Toro-Isla Colón, Panamá
The archipelago of Bocas del Toro is in the province of Bocas del Toro, Panama. It is located in the northwest of the country, near the border with Costa Rica. The capital of Bocas del Toro is Colon, on Isla Colon, the largest in the archipelago and it is here where the hotels, restaurants, tourist information centres, tour operators, and other facilities are concentrated.
The Town Colon is a small coastal town offering its own special charm. Its old colonial Caribbean style houses, some on stilts over the sea, as well as its park, its main street bustling with Caribbean life, mixing indigenous culture from different ethnic groups with Afro-Caribbean culture, all go towards making this location a special place.
Colon's main street is actually where most of the life on the island is centred, especially for leisure and tourism. Almost all the hotels on the island are to be found in this area, as well as numerous restaurants and bars with their own special charm.
Boca del Drago Boca Drago is almost on the opposite side of Colon, but on the same island. In order to get to Boca Drago there is a road that crosses the island. Boca Drago is located right on the seashore and is the first place where Christopher Columbus is supposed to have stepped ashore. Drago is an ideal place for swimming , surface diving enthusiasts, or snorkeling .There are hiking trails and beaches with crystal clear waters where you can see the starfish.
Isla de los Pájaros Swans Key or Bird Island is a bird sanctuary where the beautiful and rare Tropical Rabijunco Piquirrojo nests, with its white plumage, orange beak and a long tail (males), as well as the friendly gannet. Other seabirds such as pelicans, seagulls, terns and frigate birds, spend part of their time here.
Playa de las Estrellas Playa de las estrellas ( beach of the stars) is another destination which includes tours in the area. It is a lovely beach located next to Boca Drago, where the water is crystal clear and calm, so much so that one can see the starfish on the sea bottom.
The Grotto The Grotto is a cave of coral rock which is said to stretch across the whole island until it comes out at the sea in Playa Bluff. The entrance to the cave is located in the middle of the island, on the road between Colon and Boca Drago. There is a path that deviates from the main road as far as the Grotto. It is a great place to visit on a day off, either on a Mini Motorbike, or bicycle.
Playa Bluff Playa Bluff is at the north end of Colon. It is a wide beach, which is famous, when it is the season, for surfing. It is a lovely ride on a day off, whether by bike or Mini Scooter Motorbike.
